Did you serve in Iraq or Afghanistan? If so, you may be eligible to participate in a study designed to identify biomarkers associated with PTSD. You may be eligible for participation whether or not you have PTSD symptoms.

It is well known that not all people who serve in a combat zone will develop PTSD. Some people bounce back quickly after leaving the places where they experienced trauma, while others carry the experiences home with them in the form of memories, flashbacks, anger, and avoidance of people, places and things that remind them of the trauma and physiological arousal (jumpiness). We think that the identification of biomarkers for PTSD will help to identify why some people respond well after traumatic exposure when some people do not.

If you are interested in participating in this study, you should know what the steps are in participation:
  • A comprehensive evaluation to identify whether or not you have PTSD and related symptoms associated with trauma exposure, which will last approximately 3 hours
  • A series of self-report questionnaires to fill out which assess risk and trauma exposure, symptom severity, and functioning
  • Two consecutive blood draws, and a 24-hour at-home urine collection
  • A session of neurocognitive tests involving memory and attention, approximately 3 hours long
  • An MRI scan
Participation will involve 4 visits over a 2 -6 week period of time, depending upon your availability. Appointments can be scheduled as convenient for you. You will be compensated for your time and travel, up to $450.

Please call Charu Sood at 718-741-4000 x6152 if you are interested in participating or have any questions.
